「對於歌曲內涵裡的感傷用巧妙的作詞手法操作處理，其實對一個歌手兼作曲者是有點負累的，彷彿唱歌人在唱的時候是為了讓所有人聽起來也能感到相同的感傷。但這又跟單純描述有很大的不同，譬如拿一張紐約的照片，一個人看了覺得很沮喪甚至害怕，另一個人看了可能會想到所有可以在紐約做的好玩有趣的事。」Elliott Smith 說道。
民謠史上傑出的星星因長期憂鬱而殞落，在他字句呢喃間痛苦，令人無法脫離，然而他卻拋下我們先行離去了。

Elliott Smith的音樂總會帶來這樣的感受，既矛盾又真實，叫人分不清也無法抽離的墜入情緒之中，不知道你們是否也偶爾也有這樣的心情，當憂鬱籠罩時，反而更想淋久一點的雨，是苦痛的甜蜜亦或是甜蜜的苦痛呢。
